The ship had been constructed by the Christy Shipbuilding Corp. Mayer of Manchester, then chairman of the Washtenaw County Board of Supervisors, appeared at Little Creek, Va. Since LST's were first built as light cargo and troop carrier ships at the start of World War II they had been listed by number with only the larger Navy ships carrying person and place names. The move was part of a new Navy policy of removing the number designations of LST vessels and giving them the names of counties in states throughout thenation. Navy when Landing Ship Tank (LST) 1166 was re-named af ter this county. But 18 years ago the cities and villages of Washtenaw County were given a special interest in the U.S. It's likely that few people in this area knew it ever was.
